Photo: Tahra Al Hammadi/Masdar Institute News The following is adapted from a Masdar Institute article by Erica Solomon. The cost of solar power is beginning to reach price parity with cheaper fossil fuel-based electricity in many parts of the world, yet the clean energy source still accounts for just slightly more than 1 percent of the world’s electricity mix. Solar, or photovoltaic (PV), cells, which convert sunlight into electrical energy, have a large role to play in […]

Good News for Solar in Iowa!

Good News For Solar Energy in Iowa! The Iowa Supreme Court ruled July 11 that a solar installation atop a municipal services center in Dubuque does not violate Iowa law, a decision experts called potentially ground-breaking for the spread of rooftop solar power. “This is a great win for Iowa,” said Brad Klein, a senior attorney with the Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC) who represented a collective of renewable energy advocates from Iowa and across the country. Given the thoroughness of court’s decision, and the lack of any other high court rulings in this arena, Klein said he expects the Iowa court’s ruling […]

With price parity within reach, green movement seems unstoppable; private sector, public opinion unwavering in rising support for clean energy options. Demand for renewable energy by consumers and businesses – along with a long-term commitment to cleaner portfolios from utilities – seems to be fundamentally shifting energy attitudes and decisions, independent of federal stances, according to Deloitte’s annual “Resources 2017 Study – Energy Management: Sustainability & Progress.“

Why Residential Solar Is Having A Powerful Impact

For decades, home solar systems were a great idea that fell short of economic viability, an indulgence only a select few could afford. But today, the U.S. residential solar market is enjoying unprecedented growth. It saw a second straight quarter of record expansion in Q2 2015, according to the U.S. Solar Market Insight report released in September by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). The report highlights several significant residential solar milestones. Residential installations in the second quarter topped the first quarter by 6 percent and were 70 percent higher than the second quarter of 2014. California installations account for 49 percent […]

The Move to Granular Electric Pricing

EDITOR’S NOTE: Geoffrey Parker, co-author of “The Platform Revolution,” will keynote the Empowering Customers & Cities executive utility and energy conference in Chicago November 1-2. He prepared this executive summary of the energy revolution now underway in New York state at the request of The Energy Times. The utility of the future envisions a dramatic, sustained increase in the use of distributed energy resources by retail customers as well as by the distribution utilities serving those customers. That new framework will require changes in policies and regulations in three major categories – utility support for and procurement of DER, distribution utility cost […]
